Get out and experience the wild outdoors,
King Willy Camping style.
Sure, hiking, roasting marshmallows, and swimming in lakes are camping staples, but what about adding a little extra adventure to your next trip? If you’re ready to level up your time outdoors, below are some not-so-ordinary things to try on your next getaway.
Go Treasure Hunting With a Metal Detector
Sweep around the campsite or along hiking trails—some people have found old coins, arrowheads, and strange little artifacts from decades (or centuries) ago. You never know what the land might give back.
Try Geocaching
Like a real-world treasure hunt using GPS coordinates, geocaching lets you explore nearby towns, parks, and trails. You might uncover hidden containers, fun trinkets, or even messages from past explorers. Just download a geocaching app before you hit the road.
Stargaze With a Twist
Bring a star chart, app, or telescope and make it an overnight stargazing challenge. Try to spot planets, identify constellations, catch a meteor shower, or count how many satellites you can find.
Map out a Hike
Skip the GPS and go old-school with a map and compass. Plot out a route and see if you can navigate your way to a designated spot and back. It’s part adventure, part survival skill. Use the location of the sun to determine which way you should go.
Cast Animal Footprints or Trace Flowers
Bring some plaster and create casts of wild animal tracks you find in the mud or dirt. It’s a cool way to learn about the wildlife around you, not to mention makes a great souvenir. If you can’t get plaster, tracing large leaves and flowers in a sketchbook is always fun. Flatten the flower in the sketchbook and use a crayon to sketch over the flower’s design to keep forever!
Hit the Local ATV Trails
Craving a little speed and dirt? Research nearby ATV and UTV trails for an off-road adventure that’s anything but boring. Whether you’re tearing through wooded paths or cruising wide-open backroads, it’s a wild way to see the landscape. Don’t have your own rig? Many areas near campgrounds offer ATV/UTV rentals for a few hours or even a full day, just do some research around your campground.
Hike to a Panoramic Viewpoint
There’s nothing like earning your view. Find a local trail with a summit, cliffside overlook, or fire tower, and make the trek—camera or phone in hand. These spots are perfect for capturing sweeping landscapes or golden hour glow. Have you ever caught the sunrise on the top of a mountain?
On a beach, search for Seaglass and Colorful Rocks
Beaches always have beautiful rocks and pieces of faded seaglass that wash upon the shores. Collect them on a walk along the beach and create a colorful rock garden when you get home to remember your trip!
